Peace-building Education and Peer Mediation

In partnership with Scottish Mediation and WOSDEC.

The overall aim of the wider project is for the selected Glaswegian primary school to be ‘a beacon for peace-building in its local community’: where staff and pupils develop empathy and think critically and creatively about conflict and conflict resolution/transformation within their school experience, within their communities and within the wider world.  The wider project adopts the ‘1 – Peace With Myself; 2 – Peace Between Us, and 3 – Peace Among Us’ model, simplified from the UNICEF definition of Peace Education, and the 4 levels of Peace from the English peacefulschools.org.uk. The project will focus specifically on equipping students to fulfill stage 2 of the peace model- Peace Between Us, by training P6 students with the skills they need to conduct mediations when fall-outs happen between pupils in younger years. 

As the area in which we are working has been experiencing high levels of flag raising over the past year, this project could not be more timely. It is hoped that the skills young people and adults learn in the school will have a subsequently peaceful impact on the wider community.
