Our Member Organisations

Gender Action for Peace and Security (GAPS) is the UK’s Women, Peace and Security civil society network. We are a membership organisation of multi-mandate international NGOs, peacebuilding organisations, women’s rights organisations and human rights organisations.

We were founded to progress the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. Our role is to promote, and hold the UK government to account on, its international commitments to women and girls in conflict areas worldwide. GAPS does this by working with GAPS members and global partners.

The Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) is the official aid and development agency of the Catholic Church in Scotland. From Aberfeldy to Addis Ababa, Benbecula to Bogotá, SCIAF works with people of all faiths and none, providing support in times of crisis, helping them build brighter futures, and campaigning for a world free from poverty and injustice where all can flourish.

The Scottish Council on Global Affairs is a hub for research and policy-informed, non-partisan debate on international relations and global politics.

The Council’s core mission is as a much-needed institutional framework to facilitate and amplify multi-disciplinary research and to link this expertise with policy stakeholders in Scotland, the UK and beyond; to promote informed discourse and debate on international affairs within Scotland through informed commentary and a series of public-facing events; to forge partnerships with civil society and research institutions to amplify the global reach of Scottish expertise.

West of Scotland Development Education Centre (WOSDEC) has been a trusted third sector provider of professional learning in Global Citizenship to educators in the West of Scotland for over two decades. Based in Glasgow, we are dedicated to empowering educators across Scotland, equipping them with expertise in Global Citizenship, Peace Education, Learning for Sustainability, and Rights-based Learning through an anti-racist, decolonial and intersectional lens.

Our study of antiquity is dominated by warfare. By contrast, ancient ideas of peace and approaches to peacebuilding have received relatively little attention. The Ancient Peace Studies Network aims to address this shortcoming and to promote new ways of exploring how peace was envisioned, sought, lost and remade by ordinary people in many different contexts around the ancient world. Founded in 2025, it brings together researchers from a wide range of disciplines with expertise in different cultures and time periods. As well as shedding new light on ancient experiences and discourses, the APSN aims to build dialogue between ancient and modern peace studies.

The Centre for Responsible Debate is grounded in the belief that there are better ways to discuss contentious issues than we witness in much contemporary culture. Instead of seeking to ‘win’ in the marketplace of ideas, we believe debate can and should help us to find shared purpose and inclusive solutions, even amongst those who disagree deeply. Adversarial styles of debate, in person and online, can drive conflict. By contrast, inclusive and respectful dialogue can support problem-solving and foster peace. Our mission is to empower individuals and organisations to get better at discussing contentious issues with shared purpose.

Dove Tales, the Association of Scottish Artists for Peace, uses art to challenge the place of war in society, promote peace, dialogue, humanitarianism and cultural exchange.

Educators for Peace is a network of educators from multiple sectors including schools, colleges, community education and universities. They seek to empower future generations with peace pedagogies that can transform their lives, communities and the wider world.

The Glasgow Latin American Research Network (GLARN) provides a forum for people from across the University and our city to meet and share research and information relating to Latin America. As part of our work, we frequently engage with issues of peacebuilding in the region, including the Peace Process in Colombia, post-conflict challenges in Central America and the violent orders of criminal groups throughout Latin America. We bring together researchers, activists, diaspora networks and people from across Glasgow through a range of events, such as public talks, workshops and film screenings, that aim to build solidarities, exchange knowledge and promote understanding of the ongoing impacts and legacies of conflict in Latin America.

Medact is an organisation of health professionals working for peace and social, health and climate justice. They are the British affiliate of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. 

Peaceful, Secure & Empowered Societies (PSES) is an interdisciplinary research cluster of around 100 researchers at the University of Glasgow. PSES facilitates interdisciplinary research and research–practice collaborations aimed at building peaceful, secure, and empowered societies across grassroots, local, national, and international levels. It offers a platform that brings together diverse expertise to address the multidimensional challenges of contemporary peace, security, well-being, and resilience.

Uniform November is a peacebuilding consultancy rooted in the belief that architecture, space, and memory are vital tools for resilience and recovery after conflict. Founded by Frazer MacDonald Hay, a former UN staff member with extensive field and policy experience, we work at the intersection of heritage, housing, and human recovery.

Our approach combines consultancy, training, and original research to help organizations and communities adapt to the legacies of violence. From heritage reuse and HLP (housing, land, and property) solutions to trauma-informed memorialisation, we develop practical interventions that strengthen social cohesion and reduce the risk of renewed conflict.

We have partnered with UNESCO, ICCROM, IOM, the British Council, and UN-Habitat on projects in Iraq, Syria, and beyond, helping local actors transform damaged places into catalysts for peace.

Uniform November exists to ask difficult questions, share critical insights, and design grounded strategies for recovery and resilience.

Scottish Mediation was established in 1990 to: Raise the profile of mediation in Scotland,
Act as a professional body for mediators in Scotland, Maintain the Scottish Mediation Register of mediators, Provide access to quality assured mediation services.

Scottish Mediation seeks to: Promote a wider understanding of the appropriate use of mediation in conflict management and prevention, Support and promote education, training and research in skills and best practice, Create and encourage links between mediators and Scottish public, private, voluntary and community organisations , Promote and organise standards of professional conduct and training.

Secure Scotland is a small voluntary group of people and organisations, all of whom are active in different aspects of challenging prevailing ideas of security. In place of practices that increase inequality and make us less safe, we think Scotland could look after all its citizens and their environment by responding to basic needs and real threats, instead making useful contributions to peace and security in the global community. One project is the Edinburgh hub, called Words and Actions for Peace, where we build community. Others include presenting Scotland at United Nations meetings, engaging with the Scottish Parliament, publishing The Occasional News, hosting panel discussions, exhibitions, wee gigs and film screenings and offering workshops at festivals or events, Action, including direct action is supported if it complies with a non violent and compassionate approach.

Peace & Justice (Scotland) was originally named Edinburgh Peace & Justice Centre. It aims to deliver projects to promote non-violence, human rights, conflict resolution, disarmament and ecological sustainability, developing culture of peace and sustainability.

Since 2022, Peace & Justice’s work has been based at Words and Actions for Peace (WandA, 58 Ratcliffe Terrace, EH91ST) a shared hub set up by Secure Scotland. WandA is a space where groups and individuals can meet, share resources, watch films or host events, and is open from 10 – 4.00 during the week and in the evenings at the weekend for special events. The Centre for Policy, Conflict and Collaboration Research at Stirling University seeks to bring together international and domestic politics and history, environmental management and climate science, policy making and theory, as well as the advancement of professional practice and theoretical developments. They regularly engage with professionals in diplomacy, military, international development, environmental protection and biodiversity conservation and other related areas, both in our teaching and in our research. This Centre is co-hosted by the Division of History and Politics and Biological and Environmental Sciences.

Scotland’s International Development Alliance (SIDA) is the membership body in Scotland for everyone committed to creating a fairer world, free from poverty, injustice and environmental threats. Our membership brings together a diverse range of organisations and individuals including NGOs, businesses, academic institutions and public sector bodies that operate in over 100 countries.

Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (Scottish CND) campaigns for the removal of nuclear weapons from Scotland and the UK, and for global nuclear disarmament. They work to secure the scrapping of the UK’s Trident nuclear weapons system, based on the Clyde, and to prevent its replacement.

Their vision is a world without weapons of mass destruction. They oppose the manufacture, stockpiling, testing, use and threatened use of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, and call on Britain to abandon nuclear weapons, bases and alliances as a first step toward complete and general global disarmament.

Scottish CND is part of the wider CND movement and supports international efforts toward disarmament, including the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. They believe Scotland has a crucial role to play in advancing the Treaty and building a safer, nuclear-free world.

The British Red Cross is a humanitarian charity providing aid, emergency support, and help to communities in need across the UK and the world.

Quakers have a long-standing commitment to peace, rooted in the belief that there is “that of God in everyone,” which makes all life precious and opposes violence. This belief, translates into various actions; promoting peace education and opposing militarism in schools; concerns over the links between militarism and climate breakdown; and support for the right to conscientious objection. Quakers have used creative and transformative approaches to peace building including quiet diplomacy internationally. In Scotland Quakers have been working with the Scottish Government on peacebuilding in schools through it Peace at Heart resource and raised a petition to counter growing militarism in schools, to track military visits to schools and allow pupils to have the right to abstain from these visits.

Scotdec supports Global Citizenship and Anti-Racist education through the provision of professional learning and classroom resources. Their vision is for an education system that empowers learning communities to realise their potential to play an active role in creating a more socially just and sustainable world.

In 1945, Christian Aid was born out of the need to respond to the effects of violence and conflict of this time. In the following 70 years they have worked in many conflict-affected countries and settings, often working directly on issues of violence and peace. While they are not a specialist peace building organisation, tackling violence and building peace is a strategic priority.

Academi Heddwch Cymru is Wales’s national peace institute. Their mission is to help people in Wales contribute to peace: locally, nationally and globally. Through research, education and engagement, they work with communities, organisations, government and researchers to create a fair, just and non-violent future.
