Children and young people in Scotland are increasingly aware of global conflict and its impacts as it filters into their social media feeds, is visible in local protests and divisive actions, pushes up the cost of living, or through their own personal connections with countries experiencing war.
Our project explores how schools can become spaces where young people can discuss, reflect and understand global conflict through the lens of peace and justice and consider how educators can address these issues in the classroom.
We will run a series of workshops around the need and format for education resources and guidance which enable educators to discuss and explore current global conflicts. We will have an emphasis on supporting learning around Palestine, why some conflicts, such as those in Sudan, have such a low profile, and how to be responsive in times of crisis. We will explore guidance requirements around the how and why of teaching about conflict as well as the what of conflict in different global contexts. We will consider the support young people need to address anxiety around global conflict and the critical literacy skills to process what they see and hear.

Highland One World Global Learning Centre (HOW) is a third sector education organisation working across the North of Scotland to support the development of Global Citizenship, Anti-Racist and Human Rights education through the provision of professional learning and resources. We believe education is fundamental to creating a more just, peaceful and sustainable world, and work in partnership with schools, educators and other organisations to support young people to become critically informed and active global citizens.
